(Citrus reticulata)

Oranges, kumquats, tangerines and pomelos are common Chinese New Year food gifts because they are believed to bring good luck and happiness. The Chinese words for orange and tangerine closely resemble the words for luck and wealth. The name “mandarin” is taken from the title of counsellors in the Chinese imperial courts  who wore bright orange robes and headpieces with buttons that resemble the fruit.
